New research by Halifax Home Insurance has highlighted the most popular places where property owners choose to hide their valuables.
It was found that many people tend to keep expensive belongings under the bed, as well as in their sock drawer, on top of wardrobes or in a bedside table.
Around a fifth of those who took part in the survey also claimed that their home has previously been targeted by thieves, while there was evidence that the popular places had been searched.
David Rochester of Halifax Home Insurance said that the research demonstrated that people need to "get smarter" about protecting possessions.
He added: "Safes are a good idea as this allows your possessions to be locked away. Opening a safe would be time consuming for a thief, or difficult to transport, therefore making the thief think twice about taking it."
Recent research by Abbey Insurance found that adults spend over £552 million repairing damaged caused to their properties by youngsters.
